College students and staff
go green
Norwich Evening New October 16, 2007
More than 400 students and staff at
Norwich City College made pledges to travel to college in a more Environmentally
friendly manner. The Green Travel Day held at the college on Ipswich
Road on Friday, September 28, encouraged people to sign up to car sharing
schemes and use cycles. A special Pledge Tree brought along by
Norfo1k County Council's Travel Planning Officer, Josie Barnett, was set up in
the centre of the college foyer.
Students and staff were invited to write their green travel pledges on
leaf-shaped paper and then attach them to the tree. Ms Barnett was
on hand to give green travel advice throughout the day along with the college's
commercial services administrator, Hilary Cook and student in officers.
Ms Barnett said: "There was so much Interest from students and staff and we’ve
been delighted their response. Nearly 25pc of the journeys we make are two miles
or less, and there is the opportunity for us to change our habits and consider
alternatives to taking the car that are healthier for people and for the
environment." More than 40 people also signed up to the Council's
Norfolk Car Share Scheme to join 2,400 others who have already done so across
the county. Students and staff who cycled rather than drove into
college on Green Travel Day were rewarded with free refreshments on arrival. A
raffle sponsored by Anglia Bus and Coach was held during the day.
The first prize, a new bicycle from Halfords, was won by 17 year old retail
student Joseph Watson, who hails from Cawston.
