How to be a cycle-friendly employer

These ideas arose when setting up a bicycle user group at the University of East Anglia.

·         ethos of encouraging ‘greener’  transport/reducing car use

o        travel plan

o        audit to find out how staff travel to work

o        provide facilities for cyclists

·         encouraging cooperative working relations and good communications

o        newsletter

o        website/intranet

o        consultation

o        management attend meetings

·         concern for staff health and welfare

o        opportunities for exercise

What can cycle-friendly employers provide for cyclists

·         good cycle parking

o        Sheffield racks, preferably with a shelter

o        well-lit

o        near entrances so ‘passive’ surveillance – not tucked away behind buildings

o        secure

·         maintenance facilities

o        emergency repair kit/tool box and pump at reception, gate or with known person

o        somewhere to carry out repairs

o        batteries, lights, fluorescent vests on sale

·         washing and changing facilities

o        lockers/storage space

o        somewhere to dry wet clothing (useful for joggers also)

·         financial incentives

o        cycle mileage for business trips (same as car allowance)

o        interest-free loans to purchse a cycle

o        other tax incentives eg bike-to-work breakfasts (6 allowed per year by Inland Revenue)

·         other

o        pool bikes

o        intranet and noticeboard space – list of bike/repair shops, phone numbers

o        permit a bicycle user group – social, business

o        encourage visitors to cycle – good signage, include on all information fliers and ‘how to find us’ plans including directions on websites

o        check with Cyclists Touring Club or ETA regarding insurance
